Introduction to Sutures and Joints
Definition of Sutures: Sutures are fibrous joints found in the skull where tiny gaps filled with collagen connect the bones, allowing for minimal movement.
Discussion of Skull Sutures: As individuals age, these sutures disappear, resulting in the skull forming one continuous bone, except for the mandible (jawbone).
Types of Joints
Syndesmosis: A type of fibrous joint consisting of sheets of tissue connecting two bones, allowing for some mobility.
Examples:
Radial Ulnar Interosseous Membrane: Connects radius and ulna, allowing for pronation and supination movements.
Tibiofibular Interosseous Membrane: Connects tibia and fibula.
Gomphosis:
Definition: Refers to the joint that holds teeth in their sockets in the jaws.
Extraction Process: When a dentist extracts a tooth, they do not merely pull it out; they carefully twist and rock the tooth to facilitate removal.
Cartilaginous Joints
Two Types of Cartilaginous Joints:
Synchondrosis:
Definition: Instances where cartilage unites two bones.
Example: Epiphyseal plates found in growing bones. These eventually convert to bone through a process termed synostosis.
Symphysis:
Definition: Joints where bones are united by fibrous cartilage, such as intervertebral joints and the pubic symphysis.
Distinct Feature: These do not turn into synostoses; they remain cartilaginous.
Examples: Intervertebral discs and pubic symphysis.
Synovial Joints
Most Common Joint Type: Synovial joints, characterized by five key elements:
Hyaline Cartilage: Covers the ends of the bones in the joint, known as articular cartilage.
Joint Cavity: A small gap, or synovial cavity, between the articular cartilages of the bones.
Synovial Fluid: Found within the joint cavity, serving to lubricate the joint and provide nutrients to cartilage.
Joint Capsule: A fibrous capsule that encloses the joint and cavity and is continuous with the periosteum of each bone.
Reinforcing Ligaments: Structures outside the capsule that maintain joint stability.

Joint Types and Structures
Upper Limb Joints:
Significant Joints: TMJ (temporomandibular joint): modified hinge joint
atlanto-occipital joint: condyloid joint
atlantoaxial joint: c1 and c2 make a pivot joint for “nuh uh” movement
intervertebral joint: between the vertebra, make a cartilaginous and symphysis joint
Acromioclavicular joint (clavicle and scapula) makea a plane joint
Shoulder joint: scapula and humerus making a ball and socket joint.
Elbow Joint Formation: Comprised of three bones – the humerus, radius, and ulna that make a hinge joint.
Ulnohumeral Joint: Involves the ulna and humerus.
Proximal Radioulnar Joint: A pivot joint between the radius and ulna allowing rotation.
Radioulnar distal: also a pivot joint
Wrist Joint:
Components: Radius, scaphoid, and lunate (radiocarpal) makes a condyloid joint.
Specific Joint: The carpometacarpal joint of the thumb (carpal (trapezium) and metacarpal 1) is a saddle joint.
Lower Limb Joints:
Sacroiliac Joint: (sacrum and coxal bone) synovial in childhood but fibrous in adult (Some movement is allowed but tightens over time with age leading to a more fibrous structure).
Pubic symphysis: pubic bones that make a cartilaginous joint
Hip Joint: coxal and femur that makes a ball and socket joint.
Knee Joint: tibia and femur (tibiofemoral) modified hinge joint.
Between femur and patella (femoropatellar) plane joint, some sliding involved
Tibia and Fibula joints: tibiofibular (proximal) is a plane joint, distal tibiofibular is a syndesmosis Joint
Ankle joint: tibia fibula and talus, hinge joint
Joint Types Overview
Classification of Synovial Joints by Shape:
Planar Joint: Flat surfaces allowing for sliding movements.
Hinge Joint: One plane motion like a door.
Pivot Joint: Allows rotation around a single axis, as seen in the proximal radioulnar joint.
Condyloid Joint: Involves rounded sides (condyles) fitting into shallow depressions, allowing movement in multiple planes. (Very shallow ball and socket joint)

Impact of Exercises: Increased physical activity can cause temporary swelling due to excess synovial fluid production, especially in competitive sports, leading to the necessity of draining excess fluid in some cases.
