Comprehensive Notes on Balanced, Unbalanced, and Net Forces

Fundamentals of Force and Motion

  • Definition of Force: A force is defined as a push or a pull exerted on an object resulting from its interaction with another object.

  • Unit of Measurement: Force is quantified in Newtons (NN).

  • Effects of Forces on Motion: Applying a force to an object can alter its state of motion in several distinct ways:

    • Causes a stationary object to start moving or a moving object to stop moving.

    • Causes an object to speed up (accelerate) or slow down (decelerate).

    • Causes an object to change its direction of travel.

  • Scenario Analysis (Pushing a Heavy Crate):

    • Same Direction: When two people exert forces on a crate in the same direction, their forces combine, causing the crate to move forward efficiently or potentially tip over if excess pressure is applied.

    • Opposite Directions: When two people push against each other on opposite sides of the crate, opposing pressures are established:

      • If both individuals exert equal force, the box will not move at all due to opposing equilibrium.

      • If one individual is stronger, the box will move slightly or slowly in the direction of the greater applied force.
