Concept and Nature of Individual Differences

Variation and differences are inevitable aspects of all biological populations on Earth. The natural world displays an innumerable variety of flowers, plants, trees, birds, and animals; humans are no exception to this rule. Just as humans differ in skin color and physical features, they also differ at the behavioral level. This variation in behaviors, or individual differences, is what makes the study of psychology worthwhile. Individual differences refer to variation among individuals with reference to a single or a number of characteristics. This diversity is a pervasive feature of the world. Imagine a world where every individual was identical in thinking, attitudes, intelligence, social status, and personality—such as a world where everyone was an extrovert. Such a reality would lack the diversity that makes psychological study interesting.

Plato once observed that no two persons are born exactly alike, but each differs from the other in natural endowments, with one being suited for one occupation and another for a different one. In the field of psychology, the study of individual differences encompasses how people think, feel, want, need, and act. Researchers examine not only how people differ but also why they differ. Understanding these differences is essential because it helps in predicting and explaining human behavior more accurately.

Nature vs. Nurture Debate in Individual Differences

Psychologists often address the nature vs. nurture debate to explain why some people are resilient and persistent while others lose motivation and feel depressed, or why siblings from the same family have different aptitudes and intelligence levels. This debate centers on whether human behavior results from genetic inheritance or environmental influence.

Nature refers to the genetic factors inherited from parents, such as height or skin color. Nurture refers to the environmental factors that impact development, including the rearing process, family socioeconomic conditions, social support, and cultural factors. Nativists are those who believe behavior is purely controlled by hereditary factors, regarding behavioral differences as the result of $1$ unique genetic makeup. On the other end of the spectrum, environmentalists or empiricists argue that people differ due to their experiences and environmental conditions. John Locke, a prominent supporter of the empiricist view, equated the human mind to a tabula rasa—a blank slate that is gradually filled with life experiences.

Contemporary perspectives suggest that defending an extreme side of this debate is inadequate for explaining human behavior. Instead, both genetic and environmental factors play vital roles. For example, height is influenced by genetics, but if a child inherits genes for tall height but does not receive proper nourishment, those genes will not manifest, and the child will remain shorter than their parents. Similarly, in abnormal psychology, the roots of mental disorders are explained through a combination of genetic predisposition and environmental factors.

Definition and Nature of Intelligence

Intelligence is a hypothetical construct referring to higher-level abstract thought processes. Defining intelligence appropriately has been a challenge for psychologists. In 19861986, a symposium organized by Sternberg and Detterman described intelligence in several ways: a quality of adaptive behavior (Anastasi), the end product of development in the cognitive-psychological domain (Carroll), a societal concept operating in academic, technical, social, and practical domains (Carroll), the error-free transmission of information through the cortex (Eysenck), acquired proficiency (Glaser), and mental self-government (Sternberg).

Alfred Binet, who developed the first standardized intelligence test in 19051905, defined intelligence as the ability to judge well, understand well, and reason well. David Wechsler (19441944) described it as the aggregate or global capacity of the individual to act purposefully, to think rationally, and to deal effectively with his/her environment.

Spearman Theory of Intelligence: The Two-Factor Theory

Charles Spearman proposed the two-factor theory of intelligence after noticing that children who performed well in one subject often had good marks in others. Using a statistical method known as factor analysis, he proposed that all mental activity consists of two factors: the general (gg) factor and the specific (ss) factor.

The gg factor is innate, constant throughout life, and present in all cognitive activities. It represents the common factor affecting all activities; individuals high on the gg factor are considered more intelligent. An overall score on an intelligence test represents this factor. The ss factor is learned and varies depending on the task within the same individual. One can possess many ss factors, each associated only with specific mental activities. Intelligence is viewed as the sum of the gg factor and various ss factors.

Thurstone Theory of Intelligence: Primary Mental Abilities

Thurstone criticized Spearman’s theory, suggesting there is no single gg factor. Instead, he argued that intelligence consists of seven independent primary mental abilities (PMA):

  1. Word Fluency: The ability to think or use words rapidly, such as in anagram tasks.
  2. Verbal Comprehension: The ability to understand the meaning of words, concepts, or ideas correctly, often assessed by vocabulary tests.
  3. Spatial Ability: The ability to visually manipulate patterns and forms of objects in space.
  4. Perceptual Speed: The tendency to perceive details in stimuli quickly and accurately.
  5. Numerical Ability: The ability to solve numerical problems with speed and accuracy.
  6. Inductive Reasoning: The ability to observe facts and derive a general rule from them.
  7. Memory: The ability to memorize and recall information quickly and accurately.

Sternberg Theory of Intelligence: Triarchic Theory

Robert Sternberg (19841984) proposed the Triarchic Theory of Intelligence, which identifies three distinct forms of intelligence:

Componential Intelligence, also known as analytical intelligence, is measured by traditional IQ tests. Individuals high in this area have strong critical and analytical abilities, performing well in academic tasks, mathematics, and verbal skills.

Experiential Intelligence, or creative intelligence, is the ability to develop novel ideas or solutions. Creative individuals use previous experiences to make new inventions and find unique solutions to problems.

Contextual Intelligence, or practical intelligence, involves the ability to adapt to environmental or situational demands. This is often described as adult street smarts, where individuals apply knowledge to the real world by either adapting to their existing environment or modifying it to fulfill their needs.

Gardner Theory of Intelligence: Multiple Intelligences

Howard Gardner refuted the classic view of intelligence as purely logical reasoning, proposing instead that intelligence is the ability to solve problems or fashion products of consequence in a particular cultural setting. He initially proposed seven types of intelligence, later adding an eighth:

  1. Linguistic: High articulation and choice of words; common in poets and writers.
  2. Musical: Sensitivity to musical patterns and the ability to compose or perform music.
  3. Logical-Mathematical: Critical thinking and proficiency with abstract numerical problems; common in scientists.
  4. Spatial: Manipulation of mental images; used by navigators, pilots, architects, and painters.
  5. Bodily-Kinesthetic: Control of body movements for construction or problem-solving; seen in athletes, dancers, actors, and military personnel.
  6. Intrapersonal: Awareness of one’s own feelings, motives, and needs; common in philosophers and spiritual leaders.
  7. Interpersonal: Understanding other people’s behaviors and motives to build bonds; used by counselors, teachers, and politicians.
  8. Naturalist: Sensitivity and compassion for nature; seen in botanists, hunters, and wildlifers.

Gardner argued that traditional paper-pencil tests fail to measure aspects like interpersonal ability, which explains why some students who score poorly on IQ tests may still become great leaders.

Assessment of Intelligence and the IQ Formula

Alfred Binet and Theodore Simon were the first to measure intelligence scientifically, developing the Binet-Simon Intelligence Scale in 19051905. In 19081908, they coined the term Mental Age (MAMA) to measure a person's intellectual ability relative to their age group. Chronological Age (CACA) refers to biological age. Binet classified children as bright if their MAMA exceeded their CACA, and mentally retarded if their MAMA was lower than their CACA.

In 19121912, William Stern introduced the Intelligence Quotient (IQIQ), which is calculated using the following formula:

If MAMA equals CACA, the IQIQ is 100100. Scores above 100100 indicate higher than average intelligence, while scores below 100100 indicate lower than average. IQ scores typically follow a normal distribution with a mean of 100100 and a standard deviation of 1515.

IQ Classification and Distribution

The following intelligence classifications are based on IQ ranges:

  • Above 130130: Very Superior Intelligence (gifted)
  • 120120 to 129129: Superior Intelligence
  • 110110 to 119119: High Average Intelligence
  • 9090 to 109109: Average Intelligence
  • 8080 to 8989: Low Average Intelligence
  • 7171 to 7979: Borderline Intellectual Functioning
  • 5555 to 7070: Mild Mental Retardation
  • 4040 to 5454: Moderate Retardation
  • 2525 to 3939: Severe Mental Retardation
  • Below 2525: Profound Mental Retardation

Individual and Group Intelligence Tests

Intelligence tests are categorized based on administration and participants. Individual tests are administered to one person at a time. Examples include the Stanford-Binet Scale and the Wechsler Intelligence Scales. The Stanford-Binet Scale was adapted from the original Binet-Simon scale by Lewis M. Terman at Stanford University. The fifth version (SB5), introduced in 20032003, includes 1010 subtests measuring five factors: Fluid Reasoning, Knowledge, Quantitative Reasoning, Visual-Spatial Processing, and Working Memory. It provides three scores: Full-scale IQ, Verbal IQ, and Nonverbal IQ, and is used for ages 22 to 8585 years.

Group tests can be administered to multiple people simultaneously. Examples include the Multidimensional Aptitude Battery, Cognitive Abilities Test, and Raven’s Progressive Matrices (RPMRPM). Developed by John C. Raven in 19381938, the RPMRPM is a non-verbal test of inductive reasoning measuring fluid intelligence. It includes 6060 multiple-choice items featuring geometric designs with a missing piece, which the test taker must identify from six to eight alternatives. It exists in Standard, Coloured, and Advanced forms.

The Wechsler Scales and David Wechsler

Dr. David Wechsler developed several scales for different age groups. Unlike the traditional IQ formula, Wechsler uses actual scores relative to the expected mean score for an age group. His scales include:

  1. WPPSI (Wechsler Pre-School & Primary Scale of Intelligence): For children aged 22 years and 66 months to 77 years and 77 months. It has 1414 subtests measuring verbal, performance, and full-scale IQ.
  2. WISC (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children): For ages 66 to 1616. Often used in schools to identify giftedness or learning difficulties. The latest version is WISC-V (20142014).
  3. WAIS (Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale): For ages 1616 to adulthood. The current version is WAIS-IV (20082008).

David Wechsler was a Romanian-American psychologist born on Jan 1212, 18961896. After moving to New York, he earned a Master's degree from Columbia University in 19171917 and a Ph.D. in 19251925. He worked with Robert S. Woodworth in the U.S. Army to screen draftees and studied memory loss in WWI soldiers alongside Charles Spearman and Karl Pearson. He believed environment and biological factors both dictate intellect and that IQ is predisposed to the atmosphere in which a person lives.

Verbal, Nonverbal, and Culture-Fair Tests

Verbal tests require language-based reasoning. These were initially the standard but were ineffective for illiterate individuals, young children, or those with speech difficulties. Non-verbal tests, or performance tests, measure the ability to analyze visual information without words, often requiring the construction of patterns. Famous non-verbal tests include Koh’s Block Design Test, Cube Construction Tests, and Pass Along Tests.

Culture-fair tests are designed to assess individuals from different cultures without bias. Because every culture has unique values and languages, psychologists created tests like the Culture Fair Test (Cattell, 19401940) and the Draw-a-Man Test. The Draw-a-Man Test (Goodenough, 19261926) requires children to draw a man, a woman, and themselves on three papers. Scoring emphasizes the ability to observe accurately and think conceptually rather than artistic skill. While these tests aim to be "culture-free," the term "culture-fair" is preferred because cultural impact can never be completely eliminated.

Emotional and Social Intelligence

Emotional Intelligence (EI) was introduced by John Mayer and Peter Salovey in the early 19901990s. They defined it as the ability to perceive and express emotion, assimilate emotion in thought, understand and reason with emotion, and regulate emotion in oneself and others. Daniel Goleman popularised the term in 19951995. Mayer and Salovey’s model includes four abilities: perceiving and expressing emotions, assimilating emotion in thoughts, understanding and analyzing emotions, and regulation of emotions. Goleman’s model involves five: knowing one’s emotions, managing emotions, motivating oneself, recognizing emotions in others, and handling relationships.

Social Intelligence (SI), first used by Thorndike (19201920), is the skill of understanding and managing people. Bar-On (20062006) proposed that EI and SI are related components of the same construct, which he named Emotional-Social Intelligence (ESI). He describes ESI as a cross-section of interrelated emotional and social competencies that determine how we understand/express ourselves and relate with others daily.
