Notes on Passé Composé
The Passé Composé Overview
French uses two main tenses for past events: passé composé and imparfait.
Passé composé expresses actions that began and ended in the past.
Composed of two parts:
Auxiliary verb (present tense of either avoir or être).
Past participle of the main verb.
Auxiliary Verb and Past Participle
Most verbs use avoir as the auxiliary verb. Examples:
Nous avons fêté. (We celebrated, We have celebrated, We did celebrate)
Regular -er verb past participles are formed by replacing the -er ending with -é.
Example: parler ➔ parlé

Regular and Irregular Verbs
Past participles of -er verbs do not change for spelling in passé composé.

Regular -ir verbs form past participles by replacing -ir with -i.
Verbs: choisir, finir, grandir, obéir, réussir
