Weather/Meteorology

1)  Which layer of the atmosphere contains the most water vapor? Troposphere.

2)  What causes a tropical storm? Warm water evaporates and it rises quickly and interacts with cold air.

3) What type of weather will occur when barometric falls? Dropping barometric pressure indicates approaching stormy or rainy weather.

4) Convection currents are heat-driven cycles that occur in the air! What causes these currents? Warm air rises and cold air sinks.

5) Why are scientists concerned about ozone depletion in the atmosphere? It would allow the UV rays to reach the earth's surface.

6) How does the arrangement of air molecules differ in the troposphere from the thermosphere? The air molecules are closer apart in the troposphere and farther apart in the thermosphere.

7) Why do thunderstorms mostly occur in the summer? Thunderstorms mostly occur in the summer due to the combination of warm, moist air and unstable atmospheric conditions.

8) What type of weather exists when cirrus clouds are present in the sky? Calm weather.

9) What three gasses comprise most of the earth’s atmosphere?  nitrogen, oxygen, and argon.

Cells and body systems

10) How are euglena and volvox different?  Euglena is an individual cell, Volvox is in a colony.

11) What function does the nucleus of a cell perform?  Its primary function is to act as the control center of the cell.

12) Why is muscle considered a tissue? Group of cells that work together to perform a specific function.

13) How do the respiratory and circulatory work together? Respiratory takes the oxygen in and the circulatory delivers the oxygen.

14) How do the volvox and amoeba get their food?

  1. Volvox obtains its food through photosynthesis.

  1. Amoeba surrounds its food.

15) What unit or structure is the foundation of all living organisms? Cell

16) How do digestive systems and circulatory systems work together?  The digestive breaks down the food and then the circulatory transports it to where it's needed.

17) How is a gamete cell different from all other cells in a person's body? It has half the number of chromosomes.

18) A homozygous black angelfish (BB) is crossed with a homozygous recessive angelfish (bb). What are the results?

19) If person X and Y smoked the same number of cigarettes for twenty years, why did only one develop severe health problems? Some people have a specific genetic makeup that has a higher tolerance.

20) How do amoebas reproduce in comparison to mammals? This is why many amoebas are identical to their parents. They reproduce asexualy.

21) solve the following punnett square:

Force and motion

22) How do you determine if the vehicle you are sitting in is moving? Comparing your position to a fixed object.

23) Where is the kinetic energy of a marble on a rollercoaster the greatest? bottom of a loop or slope where the marble is moving the fastest.

24) What does an increase in potential energy lead to? Leads to an increase of mechanical energy.

25) When you enter a room and turn a light switch…a lamp turns on because? The circuit is open. Turn it off and the circuit is closed.

26) A cart with wheels is the simple machine most likely needed to move and object a distance over a flat surface.

27) How does the mechanical energy of a falling rock change? Transforms into kinetic energy. tt

28) How does a wind turbine produce electricity? It converts wind’s kinetic energy to mechanical energy.

29) As a ball is dropped, its potential energy will decrease and kinetic energy increases? The closer it gets to the floor.
