Installation of Illustrator
Steps to Install:
Visit the Adobe website or specifically creative.adobe.com.
Sign in to your account.
If opening Illustrator for the first time, users will encounter a welcome screen.
To create a new document:
Navigate to the file menu and select 'New'.
Choose a common web preset by double clicking on it.
Interface Overview
Interface Elements:
Top Menu Bar: Contains the top-level menu system; key menu options include:
Window Menu: Navigate to workspace settings.
Select 'Essentials Classic' from the Workspace menu to standardize the view for all users.
Options Bar (Control Strip): Displays tools and options specific to the selected object.
Panels on the Right:
Panels can be expanded/collapsed by clicking their respective icons.
Icon at the top right of each panel refers to the panel flyout options.
Information Bar (Bottom): Displays items like magnification level, artboard rotation, and selected tool.
Toolbox (Left Side): Contains all available tools.
To access a specific tool:
If a key is assigned (e.g., tap 'L' for the ellipse tool), the tool will highlight.
Long press on a tool icon showing a triangle indicates nested tools will be available.
Navigation Skills in Illustrator
Zooming:
Use the keyboard shortcuts to zoom in/out:
Mac: Command (⌘) + Plus (+) to zoom in; Command (⌘) + Minus (-) to zoom out.
Windows: Control (Ctrl) + Plus (+) or Minus (-).
To pan around while zoomed in:
Select the Hand Tool by pressing 'H' or use 'V' while holding the space bar.
Reset zoom to fit the whole document:
Use Command (⌘) Zero (0) or Control (Ctrl) Zero (0).
Zoom Tool:
Activate by tapping 'Z' and use click and drag to select the area you want to zoom in on.
For zoom out: Option (Mac) or Alt (Windows) + click to zoom out.
Selection Tools
Selection Tool (V):
Primary tool to select objects via visible attributes. Clicking on an object’s outline selects it.
Multiple Selection Options:
Hold Shift to add/remove objects from selection.
Dragging a marquee box around objects will also select multiple items.
Direct Selection Tool (A):
Accessed by pressing 'A'; allows selection and manipulation of individual anchor points and segments of shapes.
Distinguishing Features between Tools:
With the selection tool, visual attributes of objects are selected.
The direct selection tool shows anchor points and control handles for curve manipulation.
Making Simultaneous Selections
Select Similar Objects:
Click on an object and use the control strip icon to select based on fill or stroke color.
Magic Wand Tool (Y):
Taps into a panel allowing selection based on attributes. Users can adjust tolerance settings to select varying degrees of similarity.
Saving Selections:
Saves time by allowing users to select often-complicated artwork without reselecting attributes (e.g., select the same object properties).
Transformation Tools in Illustrator
Basic Movement:
Move objects using the selection tool or by dragging.
Dialog box for precise movement: Access via the return key to input exact XY coordinates.
Hold Alt/Option while moving to create a copy during the move.
Scaling (S):
Proportional scaling maintained by holding Shift when dragging.
Access scaling dialogue via return for numerical scaling.
Rotation (R):
Rotate objects by dragging or numerically using the return key.
Reflect (O):
Reflect objects horizontally or vertically around a center point.
Shear Tool:
Accessed through the scale tool submenu; allows skewing of objects via numeric input.
Transform Each Command
Accessed through Object menu > Transform > Transform Each.
Allows simultaneous application of movement, scaling, and rotation to multiple objects.
Random checkbox option introduces unpredictable variations to common transformations.
Free Transform and Puppet Warp Tool
Free Transform Tool (E):
Provides a heads-up display for easy transforms including skewing and scaling.
Puppet Warp Tool:
Provides mesh to manipulate shapes with added transformation points.
Useful for adjusting shapes without distorting their shapes significantly.
