Economic Utility-Notes

Economic Utility

What is Utility?

  • Definition of Utility: A product with utility has the ability to satisfy customer wants or needs.

  • Example of Utility:

    • A new pair of boots has utility because it can be worn.

    • A peanut butter sandwich has utility because it can be eaten.

  • Non-Examples of Utility:

    • A pair of shoes that is two sizes too small has no utility since it cannot be worn.

    • A ham sandwich does not have utility for a vegetarian since it cannot be eaten.

  • Understanding Satisfaction: Individuals make choices based on what best satisfies their needs and wants; essentially maximizing their utility.

  • Utility vs. Usefulness: Usefulness is often used synonymously with utility, but they aren’t identical. High utility items may not always be practical (e.g., decorative items), while useful items may lack utility for specific users (e.g., a car that cannot be driven).
