Interrogating the Text (Paper 1)

Questioning:

When reading the text, you can ask who, what, where, when and any, so that you completely understand it for the writers’ effect.

Clarify:

Clarify what the words you may not understand mean, to clear up confusion. The best way to solve any issues you may have are:

  1. breaking the word down to its root word by removing prefixes or suffixes
  2. look at words around it to make sure you have any contextual sense
  3. cover the word up and fill in the blank, to find synonyms

Evidence:

Look around the text for evidence you are asked to find so you can answer questions.

Infer:

You have to make informed inferences, based on moods, emotive language, semantic fields and connotations so that you can read between the lines to find any implied meanings within the extract. This is especially helpful for picking up on bias.
