While often limited to physical task aspects, ergonomics also addresses cognitive aspects aligning with worker capabilities.

Key Concepts in Ergonomics
Ergonomic Products:
Commonly advertised ergonomic products include keyboards and chairs designed with good body mechanics in mind.
Manufacturers refer to anthropometric measurements (averages of body sizes) for design, usually from the 5th to the 95th percentile.
This can lead to issues as there’s significant size variation between individuals at these percentiles.
General Workplace Recommendations
Computer Usage Guidelines:
Maintain relaxed shoulders, elbows close to the body, and forearms near parallel to the ground with neutral wrists.
Seats should ensure hips, knees, and ankles are at 90 degrees with feet flat on the floor to improve comfort and circulation.
Keyboard height should align with elbows; monitors should be positioned at least 20 inches away, ideally at or near eye level to prevent neck strain.
Monitor alignment:
Align to the usage of primary monitor; adjust slightly if switching monitors.
If dual monitors are used equally, center alignment is optimal.
Laptop Usage:
Laptops are poor ergonomic options because they force compromises on head and hand positions. Using an external keyboard is recommended if feasible.

Use leg power for lifting rather than back, and avoid twisting.
Ensure even use of body sides and maintain a wide base of support when lifting.
Workplace Ergonomic Evaluations

Forceful movements (extensive lifting/gripping).
