Migration

Migration is defined as the movement of people from one place to another. Migration can be:

  • Voluntary - when people migrate willingly.

  • Involuntary - when people migrate unwillingly. (Political oppression, Natural disaster, Religious oppression)

  • International - when people leave their country to go somewhere else.

  • Internal - the movement of people from a rural area to another.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF MIGRANTS

Someone who takes up residence in another country is a migrant.

Someone who leaves their country to take up residence in another country is an immigrant.

A Return Migrant is someone who has lived overseas or abroad for many years and moved home again.

WHY DO PEOPLE MOVE?

People move for THREE main reasons:

  • Entertainment

  • Employment

  • Education

These are called push or pull factors.

Push factors is a negative thing about a place which makes people want to leave their country.

  • Unemployment

  • Poor career prospects

  • Poor standards of living

  • Political repression

Pull factors are positive things that attract people to move there.

  • Employment opportunities

  • Higher standard of living

  • Exciting lifestyle

Advantages and Disadvantages of Migration

Advantages - prevented many islands from overpopulating

Disadvantages - Brain Drain: loss of skilled enterprising people
