Definition of a Team
Landy & Conte (2015): "An interdependent collection of individuals who work together toward a common goal and who share responsibility for specific outcomes for their organization."
Colquitt et al. (2023): "Consists of two or more people who interdependently work over some time period to accomplish common goals related to some task-oriented purpose."
Team Dynamics
Dependence and Commitment: The more a team depends on each other, the less the commitment and chemistry will be, except if the work is highly complex.
4 C's of an Ideal Teammate
Chemistry: The interpersonal aspect and connection between team members.
Character: Attributes that describe the integrity and work ethic of team members.
Competence: The skill level and ability of team members to perform tasks.
Creativity: The innovation and idea generation capabilities of team members.
Types of Teams
Quality Circles: Groups that come together to discuss workplace improvement and solve problems.
Project Teams: Teams formed for the duration of a project to achieve specific outcomes.
Production Teams: Teams focused on production-related tasks and responsibilities.
Virtual Teams: Teams that collaborate over distances using technology.
Input-Process-Output Model of Team Effectiveness
Model Overview: Helps in understanding team performance and maximizes effectiveness.
Input Variables:
- Organizational Context: Environment in which the team operates.
- Task Characteristics: Nature and complexity of the task to be accomplished.
- Team Composition: The mix of skills, diversity, and dynamics within the team.Process Variables:
- Norms: Accepted behavior patterns within the team.
- Decision Making: How decisions are made in the team, including processes and protocols.
- Communication: How information is shared and passed among team members.
- Coordination: The handling of interdependencies among tasks across team members.
- Cohesion: The bonding among team members that affects team morale and collaboration.Output Variables:
- Productivity/Performance: Measures of the team's effectiveness in achieving goals.
- Member Satisfaction: Individual member contentment with the team's function and outcomes.
- Innovation: The degree to which new ideas are generated and applied within the team.
Stages of Team Development
Forming: Coming together as a new team and beginning to understand roles.
Storming: Experience of conflicts as team members assert their ideas and personalities.
Norming: Establishing norms and practices for working together effectively.
Performing: Working effectively and efficiently towards team goals.
Adjourning: Disbanding the team after achieving goals or completing tasks.
Specific Issues in Teamwork
ProMES: A motivational approach that employs goal setting, rewards, and feedback to enhance motivation and performance.
Team-Role Theory: Effective teams contain individuals capable of performing 9 different roles essential for team success.

Team Development and Training
Team Development: Changes a team undergoes as it evolves and progresses.
Team Training: Coordination of individual performance towards a common goal.
Multi-Cultural Teams: Teams composed of members from various cultural backgrounds, which can lead to diverse viewpoints and approaches.
Hofstede's Cultural Dimensions Theory
Individualism vs. Collectivism (IDV): Degree to which individuals are integrated into groups.
Power Distance Index (PDI): Extent to which the less powerful accept that power is distributed unequally.
Uncertainty Avoidance Index (UAI): Measure of how cultures handle uncertainty and ambiguity.
Masculinity vs. Femininity (MAS): Distribution of gender roles in a culture.
Long-term vs. Short-term Orientation (LTO): Focus on future rewards versus immediate results.
Indulgence vs. Restraint (IND): The degree to which societies allow the gratification of basic human desires.
