Multi-Store Model

The multi-store model of memory proposed by Atkinson and Shiffrin in 1968 provides a foundational framework for understanding how information is processed and stored in the human mind. It identifies three distinct stages of memory:

1. Sensory Memory

  • Function: Detects and holds incoming sensory information briefly before it either fades or transfers to short-term memory (STM).

  • Duration: Iconic (visual) memory lasts up to 1 second; echoic (auditory) memory lasts 2-5 seconds.

  • Capacity: Very large, capturing all sensory input.

  • Key Condition: Attention is required to transfer sensory information to STM.

2. Short-Term Memory (STM)

  • Function: Temporary storage and manipulation of information for immediate use.

  • Duration: About 30 seconds without rehearsal.

  • Capacity: 7±2 chunks of information, as shown by Miller’s research on memory span.

  • Encoding: Can involve different modalities, such as converting visual input into auditory information through subvocal rehearsal.

  • Key Condition: Rehearsal is necessary to maintain and consolidate information for long-term storage.

3. Long-Term Memory (LTM)

  • Function: Stores large amounts of information indefinitely.

  • Capacity: Potentially unlimited.

  • Duration: Possibly lifelong.

  • Key Condition: Rehearsal consolidates information, making retrieval possible even after long periods.


Supporting Studies

  1. Sperling (1960) demonstrated the existence of sensory memory using a tachistoscopic grid experiment. Participants recalled more characters when prompted by auditory cues (partial-report technique) compared to the whole-report condition.

  2. Glanzer and Cunitz (1966) provided evidence for the separate stores of STM and LTM through the serial position effect. The primacy effect (rehearsal into LTM) and recency effect (STM) showed distinct memory mechanisms.


Criticisms of the Model

  1. Simplistic Structure: Emphasizes memory as a structure rather than a dynamic process.

  2. Rote Rehearsal Focus: Ignores other factors like emotional significance and deeper cognitive processing that enhance memory retention.

  3. Linear Flow Assumption: Assumes information flows in one direction, but evidence suggests LTM can influence STM.

  4. Neglect of Memory Processes: Ignores encoding and retrieval strategies critical for memory efficiency.
