Hip Bone

  • Ilium — Large, superior portion of the hip bone.

  • Ala — Broad, wing-shaped part of the ilium.

  • Iliac crest — Superior curved border of the ilium.

  • Iliac fossa — Large, smooth depression on the medial ilium.

  • Anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) — Upper anterior projection of the ilium.

  • Anterior inferior iliac spine (AIIS) — Lower anterior projection below the ASIS.

  • Posterior superior iliac spine (PSIS) — Upper posterior projection of the ilium.

  • Posterior inferior iliac spine (PIIS) — Lower posterior projection below the PSIS.

  • Anterior gluteal line — Ridge on lateral ilium for gluteal muscle attachment.

  • Posterior gluteal line — Posterior ridge for gluteal muscle attachment.

  • Inferior gluteal line — Lower ridge for gluteal muscle attachment.

  • Arcuate line — Curved ridge on the medial ilium forming part of the pelvic brim.

  • Auricular surface — Ear-shaped surface that articulates with the sacrum.

Ischium

  • Ischium — Posterior-inferior portion of the hip bone.

  • Body of ischium — Thick portion of the ischium near the acetabulum.

  • Ischial spine — Pointed projection between the sciatic notches.

  • Ischial tuberosity — Large rough area that bears weight when sitting.

  • Ramus of ischium — Branch of ischium that joins the pubis.

  • Greater sciatic notch — Large notch superior to the ischial spine.

  • Lesser sciatic notch — Smaller notch inferior to the ischial spine.

Pubis

  • Pubis — Anterior portion of the hip bone.

  • Body of pubis — Central portion of the pubis.

  • Superior pubic ramus — Upper branch extending from the pubis.

  • Inferior pubic ramus — Lower branch that joins the ischium.

  • Pubic crest — Ridge along the superior body of the pubis.

  • Pubic tubercle — Small projection on the pubis for ligament attachment.

  • Pectineal line — Ridge on the superior pubic ramus.

  • Symphysial surface — Surface where the left and right pubic bones join.

Acetabulum & Other Structures

  • Acetabulum — Cup-shaped socket that receives the head of the femur.

  • Lunate surface — Smooth, C-shaped articular surface inside the acetabulum.

  • Obturator foramen — Large opening formed by the pubis and ischium.
