Stem cells are unspecialised cells in the human body.

Potency of a cell means the ability of a stem cell to differentiate into different specialised cells. The greater the potency, the greater the variety of specialised cells that can be produced.

· Totipotent stem cells can differentiate into every other cell type.

· Pluripotent stem cells can differentiate into many cell types, but not all

· Multipotent stem cells can develop into a limited number of cell types in a particular cell line e.g. bone marrow can give rise to all types of blood cells, but no other cell types
