Prologue: The Chorus introduces the play, telling of the feuding families, the Montagues and Capulets, and the "star-cross'd lovers" who will die, ending the feud.
Act 1, Scene 1: A street brawl erupts between the Montagues and Capulets. Prince Escalus arrives and declares that anyone who disturbs the peace again will be punished with death. Romeo, Montague's son, is introduced as being lovesick for Rosaline, who does not return his affection.
Act 1, Scene 2: Capulet and Paris discuss Paris's desire to marry Juliet. Capulet is initially hesitant due to Juliet's young age but agrees to consider it if Paris can make her fall in love with him at the Capulet's upcoming feast. Romeo, still pining for Rosaline, learns about the feast and decides to go, hoping to see her there. Benvolio encourages Romeo to attend so he can see that there are women more beautiful than Rosaline.
Act 1, Scene 3: Lady Capulet informs Juliet of Paris's interest in marrying her and encourages her to consider him as a potential husband. Juliet is obedient to her mother and the Nurse, but is not enthusiastic about marriage. The Nurse provides comic relief with her rambling stories.
