Mesopotamian Civilizations

Location / Region

  • Mesopotamia means “land between rivers.”

  • It was between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.

  • Located in Southwest Asia (modern Iraq, and parts of Syria and Turkey).

  • The land was very fertile and good for farming.


Farming

  • People built canals to bring river water to their fields.

  • They grew wheat, barley, dates, and vegetables.

  • Farming allowed people to settle in villages and cities.


Government

  • Each city had its own king.

  • The king protected the people and made laws.

  • A famous king was Hammurabi, who created “Hammurabi’s Code,” one of the first written sets of laws.


Society

  • Kings and priests were the most powerful.

  • Merchants, traders, and farmers were in the middle.

  • Slaves were at the lowest level of society.


Writing

  • The Sumerians created the first writing system, called cuneiform.

  • It was written on clay tablets with wedge-shaped marks.

  • Writing was used for trade, records, and stories.


Achievements

  • Built ziggurats (large step temples for gods).

  • Invented the wheel.

  • Developed math and studied astronomy.

  1. Sumerians – lived in southern Mesopotamia, built the first cities, invented cuneiform, and built ziggurats.

  2. Akkadians – created the first empire of Mesopotamia under Sargon the Great.

  3. Babylonians – lived in central Mesopotamia, known for Hammurabi’s Code of laws.

  4. Assyrians – lived in northern Mesopotamia, had a strong army, and created one of the first large libraries.
