Liturgy - Mass that involves prayer and for a special reason.

Magisterium - The teaching authority of the church.

Martin Luther - Started the Protestant Reformation

Martyr - A person who dies for their faith/belief

Matthias - Selected as the 12th apostle after Judas left.

Monk - An ordained minister who lives a monastic life.

Monophysite - A group of people that follow the Monophysitism heresy.

Nero - A Roman Emperor who persecuted the church; 666 is his number.

Nestorius/Nestorianism - A heresy that tells people that Jesus was not incarnated.

Nominalism - A heresy that is widely spread.

Papal Schism - Split in church where there were 3 popes.

Paul - Saul before converted; saw vision and became the 13th apostle.

Pentecost - A festival where the apostles spoke out to all about Jesus.

Person v. Nature - Noah vs. Flood; A common comparison.

Peter - The first apostle and the first pope.

Persecution - To be broken up or banished

Pharisees - A religious group of people that oversee Jesus.

Pope John XXIII - Convened Vatican II

Pope Leo XIII - Known as the Rosary Pope; declared that the Rosary was to be enacted

Pope Pius IX - Conveyed Vatican I

Praxis - Faith in action

Protestant Reformation - Split in church to start new split religions.

Predestination - To be predetermined where you go when you die.

Rerum Novarum - 1 of the 4 books in Vatican II

Revelation (symbols/numbers) - 666; Mark of Beast; Dragon and Sword out of Jesus’ mouth; Devil and Jesus using words to defeat his enemy.

Road to Damascus - Where Paul had his vision of Jesus and converted.

Rome - Holy city where the western catholic church was located.

Sacrament - A visual sign of a spiritual reality.

Sacramentality - The idea that anything (people, movements, etc.) can reveal God.

Sadducees - Group that tried to stop Jesus from becoming a “fraud”

Schism - A split in the church

Simony - Sin where you can’t buy or sell church powers.

Sola Scriptura - “Only Scripture”; Bible only.

Trinity - Father, Son, HS; mystery

Transubstantiation - To change the substance of something.

Vatican I - Important meeting to change the religious ways

Vatican II - Important meeting that changed the liturgy of the church.

Zealots - Violent group that would kill Pharisees and Sadducees.
1000 (Revelation) - The 1000 years that Christ will rule over Earth.

3 Main branches of Christianity - Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant.

4 Marks of the Church - One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic

5 Patriarchs/Metropolitan Sees - Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem

Ananias and Sapphira - Lied to the church and were found dead.

Anglicanism - A protestant religion located in England.

Antioch - A holy city where the term “Christian” was first used.

Arius/Arianism - A heresy spread that states that the Father is greater than the Son and the HS.

Ascension - To rise up; Jesus rose up body and soul.

Assumption - Mary was taken up to Heaven but not by own power.

Avignon Papacy - A time period of Popes that lived in Avignon, France causing the sin of absenteeism.

Caesar - Roman Emperor who persecuted the church.

Calvinism - A protestant group who believes in no sacraments.

Catholic - Main group of Christian believers.

Charism/Spirituality - A sense of who you are and what your path is based off of personalities

Charlemagne - Crowned Holy Roman Emperor by the Pope; caused conflict.

Church - Disciples in a community.

Clergy - All of the ordained people.

Commissioning of disciples - 

Constantine - Emperor who moved the capital to Constantinople

Consubstantial/(Homoousios) - The same substance

Cornelius - Roman man who converted to Christian faith.

Council of Jerusalem - Gentiles can now follow God without Hebrew laws.

Council of Nicea - Helped stop and resolve Arianism.

Council of Trent - Response to the Protestant Reformation.

Creed - A saying that all Christians believe in.

Damascus - The road Saul was on before he converted.

Deacon - An ordained minister of the church.

Destruction of the Temple - Caused by many people and the Babylonians looking for revenge.

Diocese - Deacon Hood; group of Deacons

Disciple - A person in the church who spreads the word.

Doctrine - A teaching of the church.

Donatism - A heresy that caused a Schism.

Eastern vs. Western Roman Empire - One had Latin, the other had greek; One had unleavened bread, the other had leavened bread.

Eastern Orthodox - The Eastern side of the church.

Ecumenical Council - A council that helps solve a crisis in the church

Edict of Milan - Stopped the persecution of the church.

Edict of Thessalonica - Made Christianity the main religion in the Roman Empire.

Edict of Toleration - Officially ended the Persecution of the church.

Encyclical - a papal letter sent to all bishops of the Roman Catholic Church.

Enlightenment - An era in time where many ideas and inventions were created.

Eucharist - A sacrament that grants grace to those who take it; Jesus’ body and blood.

Excommunication - To be left out of the church and excluded from communion.

Filioque - And from the Son.

Gamaliel - A Pharisee doctor who believed in Jesus and stopped the killing of the disciples.

Gaudium Et Spes - One of the 4 constitutions in Vatican II.

Gentile - A person who has no religion.

Gospel of Luke - Told the story as if he was with Jesus. 

Greed - One of the 7 deadly sins; causes people to be angry over something.

Henry VIII - Started Anglicanism

Heresy - A false teaching of a dogma

Indulgence - To receive a huge amount of grace that can send someone to heaven.

Infallibility - To be incapable of failure.

Immaculate Conception 

Jerusalem - The Holy City where the first Temple was kept. 

Jesuits - A Holy Order made by St. Francis of Assisi.
