Restorative Justice

This approach focuses on the needs of the victim, the offender, and the community. It may allow the victim to have a role in the process such as being involved in victim-offender mediation, testifying regarding the impact that the crime has had upon her or his life, or being allowed to ask questions about the incident.

Fines and Community Service

This is the most common sentencing option in Canada for lesser crimes. A person convicted of a crime may receive a monetary fine, community service hours, or both.

Sentencing to a Facility

Many people who commit serious crimes become involved with the correctional system in Canada.

Capital Punishment

Historically, this punishment has taken many different forms including hanging, firing squads, electrocution, and lethal injection.

Social Change and Crime

The types of deterrence that are connected to different crimes can be connected to social change. If historical punishments were compared to contemporary ones, it would become clear that social advocacy for the humane treatment of those accused and concerns such as due legal process have become much more important over time.
