Basic Structural Levels of the Human Body
The human body is composed of several progressive levels of organization:
Cell: The smallest living unit of the body.
Tissue: Formed when groups of the same type of cells join together to perform a specific function.
Organ: Formed by two or more different tissue types functioning together.
Organ System: Composed of two or more organs working collaboratively.
Organism: Formed by the integration of multiple organ systems.
The Four Major Tissue Types
Epithelial Tissue:
Lines both the exterior and interior surfaces of the body.
Makes up the skin.
Lines internal gastrointestinal structures, including the esophagus, stomach, bowel, and rectum.
Lines components of the respiratory system, specifically the nostrils, trachea, and lungs.
Connective Tissue:
Forms the structural framework of the body.
Acts as a supporting matrix that connects and holds together the entire body structure.
Types of connective tissue include:
Blood
Bone
Cartilage
Fat
Muscle Tissue:
Enables movement of body parts through contracting and relaxing.
Composed of three distinct muscle cell types:
Smooth muscle: Operates involuntarily, functioning automatically without conscious control.
Cardiac muscle: Operates involuntarily, forming the muscular wall of the heart and driving heartbeats.
Skeletal muscle: Controls voluntary, purposeful movement of the body.
Nervous Tissue:
Transmits and receives electrical impulses, which serve as communication messages between the brain and the rest of the body.
Composes the brain, the spinal cord, and peripheral nerves.
Peripheral nerves: The specific nerve pathways that transmit signals from the spinal cord to all other parts of the body.

Manufactures blood cells.
Connects with ligaments, muscles, and tendons to provide support and enable physical movement.
Muscular Functions:
Facilitates physical movement of the body.
Supports the operation and functioning of internal body systems.
Respiratory System

Lungs
Gas Exchange Function:
Oxygen is absorbed into the body inside the lungs.
Carbon dioxide is expelled from the lungs as a waste product.
Cardiovascular System

Circulatory Process:
Circulates blood throughout the entire body.
Takes oxygen absorbed by the lungs and delivers it via the bloodstream to all other body tissues.
Once oxygen is delivered to the target tissues, the blood returns through the heart to begin the circulatory cycle again.
Nervous System and Sensory Organs
Divisions of the Nervous System:
Central Nervous System (CNS): Composed of the brain and spinal cord.
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS): Composed of all other nerves that branch throughout the body.
Sensory Organs:
Considered specialized components of the nervous system.
Include the eyes, ears, tongue, skin, and nose.
Support the five primary senses:
Sight
Hearing
Taste
Touch
Smell
Work directly with the nervous system to send and receive messages to and from the brain.
Endocrine System
System Overview:
A network of glands and organs that synthesize and secrete chemical messengers known as hormones.
Hormone Definition and Mechanism:
A hormone is a specialized chemical secreted to regulate physical body functions and emotional states.
Hormones are released directly into and circulated through the bloodstream to reach and influence target cells.
Digestive System
System Overview:
Consists of the alimentary canal along with specialized organs that facilitate digestion and nutrient absorption.

Secondary Sex Characteristics:
Distinct physical characteristics associated with biological females and males (such as widened hips in females and deepened voices in males).
These characteristics are products created by the activity of the reproductive system, rather than structural components of the system itself.
