First president elected through a democratic process
He used the spoils system to reward his supporters
He fired people in office and replaced them with his friend and supporters
Politcal patronage- giving rewards to supporters
The Jeffersonians were also known at the Democrats
Whigs Party= nationalistic, elitist, loose constructionists, gov. Involved in the economy
They wanted the national bank, internal improvements, and protective tarriffs
Democrats favored state rights and no gov involvement in econ
Jackson believed the bank was evil
Believed the bank infringed on the state’s rights
Jackson opposition = Whigs
Made him look like a king/tyrant
