Connective Tissue
- General Information:

Classification of Connective Tissues
- Subclasses of Connective Tissue:
- Loose Connective Tissue:
- Areolar:
- Description: Gel-like matrix with all three fiber types; provides cushioning.
- Functions: Wraps and cushions organs, plays a role in inflammation.
- Location: Widely under epithelia, forms lamina propria.
- Adipose:
- Description: Sparse matrix; closely packed adipocytes (fat cells).
- Functions: Stores food, insulates against heat loss.
- Location: Under skin, around kidneys, in abdomen.
- Reticular:
- Description: Network of reticular fibers in a gel-like substance.
- Functions: Supports other cell types, forms stroma in lymphoid organs.
- Location: Lymphoid organs (nodes, marrow, spleen).
- Dense Connective Tissue:
- Dense Regular:
- Description: Parallel collagen fibers; major cell type is fibroblast.
- Functions: Attaches muscles to bones and vice versa.
- Location: Tendons, most ligaments.
- Dense Irregular:
- Description: Irregularly arranged collagen fibers.
- Functions: Withstands tension in multiple directions.
- Location: Capsules of organs, dermis of skin.
- Elastic:
- Description: High proportion of elastic fibers.
- Functions: Recoils after stretching.
- Location: Walls of large arteries, bronchial tubes.
Cartilage Types
- Three Types of Cartilage:
- Hyaline:
- Description: Firm, imperceptible matrix; collagen fibers form a network.
- Functions: Support, reinforcement; provides resilient cushion.
- Location: Ends of long bones, costal cartilages of ribs.
- Elastic:
- Description: Similar to hyaline, but with more elastic fibers.
- Functions: Maintains shape while allowing flexibility.
- Location: External ear, epiglottis.
- Fibrocartilage:
- Description: Less firm than hyaline; thick collagen fibers predominate.
- Functions: Absorbs compressive shock.
- Location: Intervertebral discs, pubic symphysis.
Bone
- Description: Hard, calcified matrix containing collagen fibers; osteocytes in lacunae.
- Functions: Supports and protects; stores calcium and fat; hematopoiesis.
- Location: Bones throughout the body.
Blood
- Description: Red and white blood cells in fluid matrix (plasma).
- Functions: Transports gases, nutrients, and waste.
- Location: Within blood vessels.
Muscle Tissue

- Skeletal Muscle:
- Description: Long, cylindrical, multinucleate cells with striations.
- Functions: Voluntary movement, locomotion.
- Location: Attached to bones.
- Cardiac Muscle:
- Description: Branching, striated, generally uninucleate.

Nervous Tissue

Tissue Repair
- Major Repair Processes:
- Regeneration: Replacement with the same type of tissue, restoring original function.
- Fibrosis: Replacement with connective tissue, leading to loss of function.
Signs of Inflammation
- Redness: Increased blood flow.
- Heat: Increased blood flow warms the area.
- Swelling: Fluid accumulation.
- Pain: Nerve endings compressed by swelling.
Developmental Aspects of Tissues
- As age increases, epithelia thin, regeneration is slower, and risk of cancer rises due to DNA mutations.
