After King Sebastião I of Portugal died in the Battle of Alcácer Quibir (1578) without an heir, his uncle Henrique I ruled briefly but also died without an heir. (Didnt have children due to being too religous)

portugal was facing a dynastic succession crisis, three main people wanted to claim the throne:

António, Prior of Crato,

Catherine of Portugal,

Philip II, King of Spain.

António, was acclaimed king by his supporters in Santarém, but he was defeated by the forces of Philip II in a battle in August 1580.

In 1580, Philip II of Spain (Felipe I of Portugal) claimed the Portuguese throne, uniting Spain and Portugal under the Iberian Union.
