2nd Year Mathematics Course Schedule and Learning Intentions April - June 2026

Chapter 12.1: Ratio and Proportion

  • Concept Introduction and Simplification (Monday 13/04/26):     * The primary goal is to master the ability to simplify a ratio into its simplest form.     * Application of ratios involves using a given amount and identifying how many parts that amount represents in a ratio to determine:         * The total amount of all parts combined.         * The partial amount of other components within the ratio.     * Homework Assignments:         * Section 12.1: Exercises Q1-5, 8-10, and 12.

  • Advanced Ratio Problem Solving (Tuesday 14/04/26):     * Continued focus on the learning intentions from the previous session (simplification and finding total/partial amounts).     * Homework Assignments:         * Section 12.1: Exercises Q15-18, 20-21.

Chapter 12.2: Time and Timetables

  • Foundational Time Skills (Wednesday 15/04/26):     * Develop proficiency in reading analog and digital clocks.     * Practice the arithmetic of time, specifically adding and subtracting different time durations.     * Homework Assignments:         * Section 12.2: Exercises Q1-4, 6, and 11.

  • Timetable Interpretation (Tuesday 21/04/26 - Partial):     * Homework Assignments:         * Section 12.2: Exercises Q12 and 13.

Chapter 11.1: Coordinate Geometry – Distance and Midpoint Formula

  • Introduction to Coordinates and Distance (Tuesday 21/04/26):     * Identify the xx-axis and yy-axis on a Cartesian plane.     * Understand the convention for coordinate pairs: the value for xx always precedes the value for yy in the format (x,y)(x, y).     * Develop the skill to label correct coordinates on specific points provided on a grid.     * Draw the xx and yy axes and accurately plot given points upon them.     * Locate the specific formula for distance in the standardized log tables.     * Calculate the distance (or length) between two distinct points using the distance formula.     * Homework Assignments:         * Section 11.1 Distance and Midpoint Formula: Exercises Q1-5, 6iv, 6v, and 6vi.

  • Midpoint Calculations and Applications (Wednesday 22/04/26):     * Determine the midpoint between two points when provided with their specific coordinates.     * Reverse calculation: Find the coordinates of a missing endpoint if provided with the coordinates of one endpoint and the midpoint between them.     * Homework Assignments:         * Section 11.1: Exercises Q8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 16, and 17.

Chapter 11.2: The Slope of a Line

  • Identifying and Determining Slope (Monday 27/04/26):     * Learn to categorize the slope of a function as positive, negative, zero, or undefined through visual inspection.     * Determine the numerical slope of a function by analyzing its graph.     * Selection criteria: Understand how to choose appropriate points on a graph to accurately determine the slope.     * Calculation: Find the slope of a line when provided with two distinct points on that line.     * Homework Assignments:         * Section 11.2 The Slope of a Line: Exercises Q1-6.

  • Slope Revision (Tuesday 28/04/26):     * Review and reinforcement of the previous session's concepts regarding slope identification and calculation.     * Homework Assignments:         * Section 11.2: Exercises Q7, 9, 10, and 13.

  • Parallel and Perpendicular Lines (Wednesday 29/04/26):     * Identify and demonstrate whether lines are parallel (slopes are equal).     * Identify and demonstrate whether lines are perpendicular (the product of their slopes is −1-1).     * Application: Use the slope formula to determine the coordinates of a missing point when the slope and one other point are known.     * Homework / Resources:         * Answers to class quiz and Slope quiz answers provided.         * Revision work due by 05/04/26.

Chapter 11.3: The Equation of the Line

  • The Point-Slope Formula (Tuesday 05/05/26):     * Utilize the equation of the line formula when provided with a specific point and the slope.     * Format the resulting equation in the standard form: ax+by+c=0ax + by + c = 0.     * Homework Assignments:         * Section 11.3 The Equation of the Line Formula: Exercises Q1, 2, 3iii, and 3iv.         * Note for next lesson: Start with question 4.

  • Two-Point Equation Construction (Wednesday 06/05/26):     * Derive the equation of a line when historical data consists only of two points located on that line.     * Homework Assignments:         * Section 11.3: Exercises Q6-8.

Chapter 11.8: Interpreting Slope

  • Advanced Slope Interpretation (Monday 11/05/26):     * Identify the slope using a graph or a line, specifically in complex scenarios where the axes units do not increase in increments of 11.     * Homework Assignments:         * Section 11.8 Interpreting Slope: Exercises Q1-7.

Chapter 11.4: The Equation y=mx+cy = mx + c

  • Slope-Intercept Components (Tuesday 12/05/26):     * Define and interpret the variables within the equation y=mx+cy = mx + c, where mm represents the slope and cc represents the y-intercept.     * Homework Assignments:         * Section 11.4 The Equation y=mx+cy = mx + c: Exercises Q1, 2, 10, 11, and 12.

  • Manipulating Linear Equations (Wednesday 13/05/26):     * Convert a linear equation written in the standard form ax+by+c=0ax + by + c = 0 into the slope-intercept form y=mx+cy = mx + c.     * Homework Assignments:         * Section 11.4: Exercises Q4-6, 13-17.         * Note: Revision material to be posted in this section.
