Week 4 - Input and Output Devices

Keyboards

  • Input device for entering characters at cursor location.
  • Can be wired or wireless.
  • Contains: alphanumeric keys, numeric keypad, function keys, delete/backspace keys, control/alternate keys, and arrow keys.

Pointing Devices

  • Used for selection and manipulation of objects.
  • Common types include: mouse, pen/stylus, touch screen.
Mouse
  • Slides on flat surface to move pointer and click.
  • Types: mechanical, optical, laser, 3D, wireless.
Pen/Stylus
  • Used for electronic writing/drawing; can convert handwriting to digital text.
Touch Screens
  • Can be used on desktops, mobile devices, and kiosks; supports multi-touch.

Scanners, Readers, and Digital Cameras

  • Input data from physical documents (source data automation).
Scanners
  • Capture images and convert to digital form.
  • Types: flatbed, portable, 3D, integrated. Quality measured in dpi.
Barcode Readers
  • Read barcodes for data representation.
RFID Readers
  • Read data from RFID tags for application in inventory tracking, security, etc.
OMR and OCR Devices
  • OMR reads data from forms; OCR converts scanned text to editable format.
MICR Readers
  • Read magnetic characters, primarily used in banking.
Biometric Readers
  • Input unique physiological traits for access control and verification.

Digital Cameras

  • Record images on digital media; measured in megapixels.
  • Different types include digital still, video cameras, PC webcams.

Audio Input/Output

  • Audio Input: Entering audio via microphone; applications in VoIP, podcasts.
  • Audio Output: Speakers, headphones, earbuds for voice/music sounds.

Display Devices

  • Present visual output.
  • Types: LCD, LED, plasma, IMOD.

Printers

  • Produce hard copy outputs.
  • Characteristics include technology types (laser vs. ink-jet), speed, resolution, connection methods, and multifunction capabilities.
Laser Printers
  • Use toner and similar to photocopiers; faster and higher quality than ink-jet.
Ink-Jet Printers
  • Spray ink onto paper; typically slower with varying quality.
Special-Purpose Printers
  • Includes photo, barcode, portable, plotters, wide-format, and 3D printers.
