Licensing Process

Learning to Drive – 5 Stages

1. Basic car control (yard)
2. Two-way streets $40–60\,\text{km/h}$
3. Multi-lane roads $60–80\,\text{km/h}$
4. Special manoeuvres (parking, hill start, 3-pt turn, emergency brake)
5. Yard test → On-road assessment → $2$ h freeway driving → RTA tests

• Aim for ≥$40$ h supervised practice; risk halves after many hours

Defensive & Risk Management

• LOOK – far, wide, mirrors; ANTICIPATE hazards; COMMUNICATE (signals, lights, horn)
• Maintain "safety margin": ≥$2$ s gap (dry) → $4$ s wet/fog; space both sides
• Never exceed posted or VMS speed; adjust for traffic, weather, load
• Seat-belt mandatory for driver + all occupants; child seat <$4$ yrs; rear seat <$10$
• Alcohol/drugs: zero tolerance (Art $10.6$); medicines – check label/doctor
• Fatigue: break if yawning, drifting, microsleep; plan trips, share driving

Turning & Roundabouts

• U-Turn: only where permitted; obey U-turn/No U-turn signs; open vs closed designs
• Two-lane RB: choose lane early; signal on entry (right for 1st exit, none for 2nd, left for >½); signal right after last exit before leaving; always give way to traffic from left already in RB

Lane Change & Overtake (MSM-H)

• Mirrors → Signal ≥$3$ s → Head-check → move smoothly
• Overtake left side only; prohibited on solid line, bends, crests, intersections, shoulder
• Return only when both headlights of overtaken car visible in mirror; keep ≥$2$ s gap

Freeways & Interchanges

• Plan route; stay right unless overtaking; no stopping/reversing; shoulder for emergencies only
• Entry: match speed, merge without forcing traffic to brake
• Exit: signal early, enter ramp, reduce to posted ramp speed

Parking Essentials

• Follow paid parking zones (code by SMS/NOL/App); parallel close & within bay; angle $60°/90°$ nose-in unless signed
• No parking: pedestrian xing, hydrants, bus/taxi lanes, People-of-Determination bays, <$15$ m junction, on hard shoulder (except emergency)

Salik (Toll)

• Gates: Al Barsha, Al Safouh, Airport T1/T3, Mamzar N/S, Maktoum, Jebel Ali; each pass deducts $4\,AED$

• Smooth accel & brake (-$10\%$ fuel)

Emergencies / Minor Crash

• Stop safely; turn on hazards; move drivable cars off carriageway (mandatory in Dubai)
