Approaches to Bioethics

Consequences-Based Approach

  • Evaluates actions based on their outcomes, seeking to maximize positive effects and minimize harms.

Duty and Rules Based Approach

Virtues Based Approach

  • Centers on the moral character of individuals rather than specific actions.

  • Examines what qualities a virtuous person would cultivate and how these traits guide ethical decision-making.

  • Focuses on the characteristics and behaviors a ‘good’ person would seek to achieve to then be able to act in the right way.

Non-Maleficence
  • The obligation to avoid causing harm, encapsulated in the medical dictum "first, do no harm."

  • Balances unavoidable harms against benefits.

Justice, Equality, and Fairness in Bioethics
