ENQUIRY QUESTION:

How do the urban characteristics change in Guildford with distance from the CBD?

CBD: Central Business District

Data Collection Methods:

Pedestrian Count:

• we used systematic sampling to sample 6 zones along a 1.2km transect

• counted the number of pedestrians who passed directly in front of us for one minute

• we stood in the middle of each zone of the transect to make the data Representative, more Accurate and Reliable

• it is unclear on who lives in Guildford and who is visiting

• it is unclear on what a pedestrian is, eg is a construction worker a pedestrian?

• took data in the middle of the day on a weekday, working population not counted, the elderly mostly

• some pedestrians were counted multiple times, human error

Questionnaires:

• we used systematic sampling to sample 6 zones along a 1.2km transect

• opportunistic sampling to question whoever was willing/available

• spent only 15 mins in each area, to make the data more accurate and representative of the whole zone

• questionnaires are subjective

• not many people are out in the daytime during the week (people are working) could have collected more data to make it more representative

• data was collected from each zone at different times of day as we went through each one throughout the day

• in different weather conditions, people’s opinions are different

Environmental Quality Assessment:

• we used systematic sampling to sample 6 zones along a 1.2km transect

• We used Survey 123

• the same person collected the data each time to make the results more reliable

• time of day, weather and time of week effects the quality of the environment

• categories are scored on opinion making data subjective

• scores should be moderated between groups so that a score of 1 for example means the same thing

Land Use Mapping:

• we used systematic sampling to sample 6 zones along a 1.2km transect

• We used Survey 123 and mapped land use against the RICEPOTS Categories

• we mapped every building to make the data more representative

• by using the RICEPOTS categories we made our results more accurate

• Survey 123 is lagged and does not always work

• some categories are unclear/too similar
