The Neurological System

Part 1:

Words to know:

• CNS → central nervous system

• PNS → peripheral nervous system

• ANS → autonomic nervous system

  • considered part of PNS

• Afferent → send something TOWARDS something

• Efferent → send something AWAY from something

The Nervous System:

Made up of:

• CNS

  • brain + spinal cord = CNS

  • afferent sensory nerves send information to spinal cord & brain

  • efferent motor nerves carry signals from brain to body

• PNS

  • cranial nerves + spinal nerves + ANS = PNS

    • ANS = sympathetic nervous system + parasympathetic nervous system

      • sympathetic → protect body in times of danger & stress

      • parasympathetic → maintains regulatory tasks of the body
