Hanging
Definition: Asphyxial death produced by suspension of the body with a ligature around the neck, where the constricting force is the weight of the whole body or of the head alone.
Mechanistic hallmark: External pressure on vital neck structures produced by gravity rather than an outside assailant.
Sub-Classification of Hanging
According to knot position
• Typical Hanging – knot at the nape of neck.
• Atypical Hanging – knot anywhere else (side, chin, front, etc.).According to degree of suspension
• Complete Hanging – no body part touches the ground.
• Partial Hanging – some body part (often lower limbs or buttocks) touches ground/support.According to medicolegal context
• Suicidal
• Homicidal
• Accidental
