Violent asphyxial Death

Violent Asphyxial Death — Core Definition

  • Condition in which the respiratory process (exchange of air between atmosphere and lung beds) is blocked by violent mechanical means.

  • Four canonical forms:
    • Hanging
    • Strangulation
    • Suffocation
    • Drowning

Hanging

  • Definition: Asphyxial death produced by suspension of the body with a ligature around the neck, where the constricting force is the weight of the whole body or of the head alone.

  • Mechanistic hallmark: External pressure on vital neck structures produced by gravity rather than an outside assailant.

Sub-Classification of Hanging
  1. According to knot position
Typical Hanging – knot at the nape of neck.
Atypical Hanging – knot anywhere else (side, chin, front, etc.).

  2. According to degree of suspension
Complete Hanging – no body part touches the ground.
Partial Hanging – some body part (often lower limbs or buttocks) touches ground/support.

  3. According to medicolegal context
    Suicidal
    Homicidal
    Accidental

Common Motives for Suicidal Hanging
  • Domestic quarrels and stressors.

  • Poverty / severe financial strain.

  • Academic failure.

  • Disappointment in love relationships.

  • Life frustrations (multifactorial).

  • Debilitating or incurable illnesses.

Physiological Symptomatology (Victim’s Experience)
  • Early: Loss of muscular power; visual flashes; tinnitus (ringing/hissing).

  • Rapid mental confusion → inability to self-rescue.

  • Loss of consciousness; considered relatively painless once unconscious.

  • Convulsive phase; face becomes distorted/livid, eyes bulge, violent struggling.

  • Respiration ceases first; heart may beat an additional ≈$$10!–!15\,\
