  • Hyper-pigmentation: Increased pigmentation.
  • Hypo-pigmentation: Decreased pigmentation.
  • Scarring on Asian skin may appear as areas of hyper-pigmentation.
  • Hypo means "low."

Psychological and Physical Effects of Massage

  • Psychological effects: relaxes the mind and reduces stress and anxiety.
  • Physical effects: reduces muscle pain, eliminates waste and toxic build-up, improves muscle tone and range of movement.

Ringworm

  • Can be referred to as Tinea Corporis.

Dysfunction of the Nervous System

  • A client that suffers from a dysfunction of the nervous system may have reduced sensation.

Dermatitis

  • Dry, red, flaky skin.
  • Caused by an allergy.

Impaired Sensitivity

  • Someone with impaired sensitivity may have diabetes.

Contra-actions within Massage

  • Examples: headaches, sickness, upset tummy.

What is Meant by a Contra Action

  • A reaction that could happen during a treatment or after a treatment.

Client Feels Sick During a Massage

  • Stop the treatment.
  • Get them some water.
  • Stay with them until they feel better.
  • Make sure they are sitting up before drinking the water.
