Adobe Photoshop Overview

Objectives

Introduction to Photoshop

  • Photoshop is an image creation, graphic design, and photo editing software developed by Adobe, created in 1987 by Thomas and John Knoll.

  • Designed for creating and editing raster-based artwork and photographs, with applications in banner ads, graphics for videos, and print.

Adobe Photoshop Workspace

  • Comprised of command menus, tools, and panels for editing images.

  • Works primarily with raster images (bitmapped) and also supports vector graphics.

Key Components of the Interface

  • Main Menu: Dropdown menus (File, Edit, Image, Layer, etc.) for accessing commands.

  • Options Bar: Displays options and settings specific to the selected tool.

  • Tools Panel: Houses tools for editing images, with hidden tools accessed by clicking and holding on icons.

  • Panels Area: Located in the lower right, used for adjusting layers, colors, and properties. Accessible through the Window menu.

Tool Classification Overview

  • Tools are organized into groups, shown as singular icons with smaller icons behind them indicated by a triangle.

  • Familiarize with the different tool categories such as Selection tools, Crop and Slice tools, Measuring tools, Retouching tools, Painting tools, and Drawing tools.
