    • Use the past simple and the present perfect to describe public art.

    • Identify and use words associated with the way people relate to public art.

Tense Comparison

Present Perfect vs. Past Simple

  • Think: What is the difference between present perfect and past simple tense?

Getting Started

  1. Past Simple Tense Usage:

    • Used when an action was completed.

    • The specific time when the action occurred is known.

    • Example: "My great-grandmother went to Mexico three years ago."

  2. Present Perfect Tense Usage:

    • Used for an action that occurred in the past but may happen again in the future.

    • The action may have been repeated.

    • It does not matter or is unknown when exactly the action happened.

    • Example: "I've lost my keys!"

  3. Usage Rule:

    • You cannot use the present perfect tense with a finished time word.

    • Incorrect Example: "I've been to the museum yesterday."

Past Simple Tense Structure

  • Definition: Used for a completed action that occurred at a known time in the past.

  • Example: "Mark went to art school in Barcelona last year."

  • Rule:

    • Past Simple construction:

    • Subject + Verb

      • Regular verbs: add -ed (e.g., talked, enjoyed).

      • Irregular verbs have their own forms (e.g., went, slept, ate).

Present Perfect Tense Structure

  • Definition: Used for actions that happened at an unspecified time in the past but are relevant in the present.

  • Example: "He has created dozens of sculptures throughout the world."

  • Rule:

    • Present Perfect construction:

    • Subject + has/have + Past Participle (e.g., has talked, have walked, has gone).

Key Terms Associated with Tenses

  • Present Perfect Keywords:

    • ever, already, just, yet, since, so far, never, for, lately.

  • Past Simple Keywords:

    • last, ago, yesterday, in.
