Course Description
Precalculus is an in depth mix of algebraic and geometric concepts that explores the most prominent functions, their graphs, their equations and their applications. Developing a deep understanding of the different mathematical functions builds critical thinking, problems solving, and prepares students for the rigors of calculus.
Course Goals
Analyze and graph linear, quadratic, polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions.
Apply trigonometric identities, laws, and equations in solving problems.
Explore limits as a preparation for calculus
Model real-world situations with mathematical functions.
Develop critical thinking and problem-solving strategies.
Units of Study
Unit 0: Algebra Review
Unit 1: Functions and Graphs
Unit 2: Polynomial Functions
Unit 3: Exponential and Logarithmic Functions
Unit 4: Trigonometric Functions
Unit 5: Analytic Trigonometry
Unit 6: Applications of Trigonometry
Required Materials
Notebook or binder for notes and assignments
Graphing calculator (TI-84 recommended or Desmos)
Pencils/erasers
Grading Policy
Unit Tests: 70%
You are allowed 1 retake per test
Original and retake test scores are averaged, not replaced by the new retake score
Your test score will not go down with a worse retake score. The original score will remain.
Homework: 15%
Homework is due at the start of every class
Homework must be fully completed at the start of class. Homework that is being finished in class will be penalized as late.
If someone is found copying someone's assignment, both assignments will receive zeros.
Your unit homework workbook is worth 4 points
The penalty for a late assignment is 0.25
The penalty for a completely missing assignment is 0.5.
Final: 15%
Finals are half take-home, half in-class
There are no retakes for the in-class portion of the final
Grading Scale:
A = 3.5-4
B = 3-3.4
C = 2.5-2.9
F = < 2.5
Classroom Expectations
Arrive prepared and on time.
Don’t talk during lecture.
Ask questions and take risks—mistakes are part of learning.
Use technology responsibly.
Academic Integrity
Cheating will not be tolerated. Students must show their work on homework and tests. Students caught cheating on a test will receive a maximum of 50% on the test with a retake.
