Chapter 3: Formatting Text and Graphics (WD 3-8)
Overview
This chapter covers the techniques for sizing and scaling graphics in Microsoft Office 365® and Office 2019. It includes methods for resizing graphics, positioning them within a document, and applying styles to enhance visual appeal. This helps improve document formatting and presentation.
Resizing Graphics
Selecting Graphics
To begin resizing a graphic, double-click on the graphic to select it. This action activates the Picture Tools Format tab, providing access to various formatting options.
Use the middle-right sizing handle: When the cursor changes to a specific resizing icon, drag it left to reduce the width to approximately 2 inches, while referring to the ruler for accurate measurement. This method helps in adjusting the graphic’s dimensions while observing the height-to-width relationship.
Using Quick Tips
As you manipulate the corner sizing handle, observe the measurements in the Size group on the Ribbon for size approximations. After resizing, if changes are unsatisfactory, the Undo button can revert the graphic to its original size.
Adjust a graphic to be 2 inches high and 2 inches wide by dragging the lower-right handle. This approach maintains proportional resizing when using a corner sizing handle, ensuring width and height are adjusted equally.
Methods for Resizing
Resizing can be performed using different methods:
Dragging Sizing Handles: Direct manipulation of the sizing handles allows for dynamic sizing adjustments.
Size Group Text Boxes: Enter specific measurements into width and height text boxes in the Picture Tools Format tab. This method offers precision compared to drag-and-drop.
Layout Dialog Box: Access via the Size tab for entering precise measurements or scaling percentages to resize the graphic effectively.
Scale and Maintain Proportions
When scaling a graphic, it’s essential to maintain its height-to-width ratio for a coherent presentation.
Use the Shift key while dragging a corner handle to keep the proportions intact during scaling.
If only one dimension needs adjustment (height/width), use the Ctrl key while dragging side, top, or bottom handles. This allows for individual resizing without distorting the overall graphic alignment.
Positioning Graphics
Adjusting Position
In the Arrange group, utilize the Position function to maneuver the graphic within the document. For example, select Top Right with Square Text Wrapping.
Specify the exact position vertically by entering a value (e.g., .6) in the Absolute position text box, enhancing the layout’s effectiveness and ensuring alignment with other textual elements.
Applying Styles
Upon resizing, apply styles such as the Reflected Rounded Rectangle from the Picture Styles group, enhancing the aesthetic quality of the graphic. This application can transform the overall presentation of your document.
Finalize adjustments by pressing OK or ENTER to implement the selected height and width measurements, exemplified by reducing a graphic to 50% of its original size or setting it to precise dimensions like 1 inch by 1 inch.
Final Notes
Always deselect the Lock aspect ratio checkbox when desiring to alter a photo’s proportions. This flexibility allows for creative adjustments, which may be necessary based on design requirements.
The implementation of these techniques significantly enhances the document's visual quality and clarifies the information presented, making it more engaging and informative.
