Manger: takes care of task such as scheduling, budgeting, organizing

Leader: provides the vision, direction of organization, goals, and objective (idea man; vision maker)

Leadership: process where individuals influences a group of people to achieve a common goal

Appointed/Prescribed Leaders: Leaders appointed by an authoritative figure

Emergent leaders: individuals who emerge from a group and automatically take charge

  • tends to be a more effective leader

Peer leadership have a higher perceived competence, intrinsic motivation and positive social behaviors. Because of this they are important to team outcomes and increase both task/social cohesion, athlete satisfaction, emotional control and collective efficacy.

  • Team captains are a good example of this.

    • captains chosen based off good social and motivational competencies have a higher leadership and acceptance rating compared to captains who were selected based off athletic talent

    • 90% of coaches rate formal captain leadership as beneficial, only 12% actually implement leadership training

      • leadership styles can be changed and learned

      • relationship v task-oriented leaders

        • relationship = high effective in moderately favorable situations

        • task-oriented = very favorable or unfavorable

  • Cognitive-mediational model

    • coach leadership behaviors are a reflection of their own personal characteristic, which is also influenced by situational factors and athletes perceptions

    • direct relationship between positive coach interactions and exercise/sport participation
