Biological Influences on Gender

Puberty and Hormonal Change

    • Empirical work explicitly connecting pubertal change to observable gender behaviour is still scarce.

  • Sexual motivation and behaviour correlate with surges in pubertal hormones (e.g., testosterone, estradiol).

Psychoanalytic Views: “Anatomy = Destiny”

  • Sigmund Freud

    • Genitals direct behaviour; gender and sexual patterns are largely instinctual and unlearned.

  • Erik Erikson

    • Extended Freud’s stance but later softened it, acknowledging some flexibility.

  • Critics

    • Argue both theories undervalue experience and ignore individual agency in choosing gender roles.

Evolutionary Psychology Perspective

  • Core claim: Reproductive pressures in ancestral environments forged sex-specific tendencies.

    • Males: evolved competitiveness, risk-taking, multiple mating strategies.

    • Females: evolved nurturing, choosiness, emphasis on resource acquisition.

  • These legacies allegedly explain modern sex differences in sexual attitudes and behaviours.

    • Hypotheses rest on speculative prehistory rather than direct evidence.

    • Too little weight is placed on cultural and learning experiences.

Social Influences on Gender

Social Role Theory (Alice Eagly)

  • Gender differences reflect historically contrasting social roles.

    • Women’s lesser power, status and resource control foster cooperative, relational traits.

    • Men’s access to resources and authority cultivates dominance and assertiveness.

Family Influences

  • Differential independence

    • Parents grant boys more autonomy than girls.

  • Achievement expectations

    • Parents often expect sons to excel in math/science more than daughters.

  • Interaction styles

    • Mothers: emphasise obedience & responsibility, especially in daughters.

    • Fathers: play and cognitive stimulation skew toward sons.

Social Cognitive Theory of Gender

  • Mechanisms: observation, imitation, reinforcement & punishment.

  • Children internalise gender-appropriate conduct seen in parents, peers, media.

Siblings

  • Younger siblings increasingly mirror older siblings’ gender roles and leisure choices across ext2yearsext{≈2 years} of early adolescence.

Peer Socialisation

Cognitive Influences on Gender

Beyond Passive Learning

  • Critics argue social-cognitive accounts neglect the active role of the adolescent mind in constructing gender.

Gender Schema Theory

  • Children build gender schemas—cognitive frameworks of what is “for males” or “for females.”

  • Schemas guide perception, memory, and behaviour; youth are intrinsically motivated to act consistently with them.

Gender Stereotypes, Similarities & Differences

Pervasiveness of Stereotypes

  • Gender stereotypes = broad mental categories about male/female traits.

  • Though attenuated, they remain widespread; boys’ stereotypes are more rigid.

  • Instrumental traits (assertive, independent) linked to males; expressive traits (nurturing, emotional) linked to females.

Interpreting Differences

  • Reported differences are averages; overlaps between sexes are substantial.

  • Origins may be biological, sociocultural, or mixed.

Physical Differences

  • Body composition: girls/women possess 2×2\times the body fat; boys/men taller & stronger.

Brain Research

  • School achievement factors include motivation, stereotype threat, dropout patterns (boys > girls), and enrolment (since 19961996 more girls in college).

  • STEM careers still tilt toward males; intersections with ethnicity amplify inequities.

Socio-Emotional Profiles

  • Aggression

    • Physical aggression higher in males across cultures.

    • Relational aggression constitutes a larger slice of female aggression.

  • Communication

    • Rapport talk (connection-oriented) preferred by females; report talk (information-oriented) by males.

  • Prosociality & Empathy

    • Females self-rate and demonstrate higher prosocial behaviour and empathy.

  • Emotion Regulation

    • Females express and decode emotions better; boys 13!!1613!–!16 often show poorer self-regulation, leading to behaviour problems.

Gender Controversy

  • Evolutionary view (D. Buss): large innate differences.

  • Social role view (A. Eagly): large but socially created.

  • Gender-similarities hypothesis (J. S. Hyde): most differences small; media inflates them.

Contextual Variation

  • Gendered behaviour shifts with situational context and culture.

Gender Role Classification & Androgyny

Historical Polarisation

  • Traditional “ideal” male: independent, aggressive, powerful.

  • Traditional “ideal” female: dependent, nurturing, power-averse.

Androgyny (Sandra Bem)

  • High endorsement of both masculine and feminine traits.

Traditional Masculinity & Problem Behaviours

  • Strong adherence to traditional masculinity correlates with premarital sex, substance use, delinquency (Pleck).

Gender Role Transcendence

  • Competence should be judged personally, not via masculine/feminine/androgynous lenses.

Transgender & Beyond the Binary

Definitions

  • Transgender (or trans/gender-diverse): gender identity differs from sex assigned at birth.

    • Includes binary (trans man/woman) and non-binary identities (gender-queer, gender non-conforming).

    • Two-spirit: Indigenous North American term.

    • Cisgender: identity aligns with assigned sex.

Health & Transition

  • Any sexual orientation possible.

  • Higher mental-health challenges; gender affirmation (social, legal, medical) mitigates risk.

  • Paths vary: some pursue hormones and/or surgery; others challenge the two-category system itself.

Discrimination
