REINFORCING WORK VALUES
Democracy- from the greek “demos”, which means people and “kratos” which means rule is literally, the rule of the people.
Work
is an activity in which one exerts strength or faculties to do or perform something.
An integral part of human life.
It can be manual or intellectual, paid or unpaid.
It refers to human activities done for self-development, service to others, help to feed and clothe others.
The value of the human work and the basis for dignity of work rest on the person. It is the human person who gives dignity to work.
Dimensions of Work:
◦ 1) Objective dimension – the external aspect of work or the product or outcome of work
◦ A. The goods produced –Ex: product, machine, tools, etc.
◦ B. Services rendered – Ex: planting, harvesting, teaching, cooking, etc.
◦ 2) Subjective dimension – the value of human work does not depend on the output but on the agent or the worker who is creative, intelligent, diligent, etc.
Rights of Workers:
◦ 1) Right to Rest
Work Day- refers to any day during which an employee is regularly required to work.
Hours of Work – refers to the time an employee renders actual work.
Regular work in a day is 8 hours.
Weekly Rest Day – a day off of 24 consecutive hours after 6 days of work
2) Right to a Safe Workplace – must provide an environment befitting a human person.
3) Right to Association – workers have the right to form or join an organizations called labor or trade unions.
SOCIAL JUSTICE - a political and philosophical concept that holds all people to have equal access to wealth, health, well-being, justice and opportunity.
2 AIMS OF SOCIAL JUSTICE TO EVERY CITIZEN
1. to receive whatever is due for him/her from society
2. to be an active contributor to the progress of the community
Examples:
- A conscientious student who abide by the school rules.
- Rights of pregnant workers such as maternity leave payment.
- Respecting the rights of co-workers.
INDUSTRIOUSNESS, PERSEVERANCE AND DISCIPLINE
Industriousness is a virtue we develop over the years
Causes of Laziness:
Selfishness –only concerned about their comfort
Arrogance – people who lacks respect for people and community
Irresponsibility - refuses to do things he or she has to accomplish
When we are Industrious:
We develop self-respect
We establish dignity to work
We show commitment
Indications of Industriousness and Perseverance at Work
1. Be grateful everyday - thanking God to start a day
2. Set high standards for the task to be achieved - preparing for a remarkable quality work
3. Strive hard for self-improvement in your work - equip yourself with new knowledge
4. Develop organized and orderly work habits- schedule and planning activities, proper time management
5. Appreciate your work and service - positive regard of oneself
6. Perceive mistakes or errors committed as opportunities
7. Maintain high integrity and goodness at work - excellence
