Solomon's disobedience

Solomon engaged himself in capital intensive projects and most were
wasteful projects. He was building the temple, the royal palace,
fortifying the walls of Jerusalem, building houses and shrines for his
foreign wives and their gods simultaneously; Solomon did not have
enough financial resources to execute these projects.

  • Solomon introduced forced unpaid labour, made the Israelites to
work in labour camps, thereby reducing them to slaves.
  • He introduced heavy taxation to feed his large household and
administrators. He gave twenty cities of Israel to Hiram in exchange
    for his services.
  • He forced the Israelites to fell timber in the labour camps of
    Lebanon.
  • He opposed Jeroboam and others who kicked against his policies.
Solomon’s policies caused general dissatisfaction in the kingdom.
  • Solomon married 700 wives and 300 concubines. He loved many
foreign women from nations God forbade the Israelites from,
because the hearts of the people would be turned from God.
  • Solomon’s wives turned away his heart from God to other gods. His
heart was not totally devoted to God as the heart of David his father.
  • He burnt incense and sacrificed to other gods of his foreign wives.
God sent prophets to warn Solomon that his economic, social and
religious policies were evil, but he did not listen.
  • God promised to divide the Kingdom, He would give a portion to
Solomon’s servant and the other part will be Judah that will be
reserved for David because of Jerusalem.
