Passé Composé

  • passĂ© composĂ© - a past verb composed of two parts (helping verb + main verb)
    • Used to tell what happened or what someone did
    • In english, you can say “I finished” or “I have finished
    • Meanwhile, in french most of the time you need to say the two parts of the verb
    • So “I have finished” becomes “J’ai fini”
  • Auxillary verbs - Helping verbs such as avoir (to have) or etre (to be)
  • Avoir - To have
    • Agrees with the subject, meaning it changes depending on the personal pronoun

Auxillary Verb: Avoir conjugations based on subject

J’ai
Tuas
Ila
Nousavons
Ilsont
Vouzavez

Example:

I have playedJ’ai joué
You playedTu as joué
She/he playedOn a joué
They playedIls/elles ont joué
We playedNous avons joué
You all playedVouz avez joué
  • In french, you have 3 endings for verbs

    • being: er, ir, and re
    • example: parler, finir, and vendre
  • To turn words into past, they usually follow a pattern depending on the verb ending.

    • For verbs ending in -er, to turn it into past tense, you have to remove the r
    • parler → parl_ → parlĂ©
    • For verbs ending in -ir, to turn it to past tense you only drop the r
    • finir → fini
    • For verbs ending in -re, to turn into past tense you drop the re, and replace it with a u
    • vendre → vend__ → vendu
  • Applying knowledge:

    • J’ai vendu
    • Tu as parle
    • Nous avons fini
  • Some verbs don’t follow the rules discussed above, and will rather turn into different words when turned into past tense

    • These are called irregular verbs
    • Examples of irregular verbs include
    • Faire, avoir, dire, povouir, voir, pouvoir, etc
    • So instead of saying “I did” as “J’ai faiu” you say “J’ai fait”
    • Boire → bu
    • Prendre → pris
    • Lire → lu
  • Another helping verb used is the verb etre (to be)

    • Only certain words use the verb etre
    • Verbs using etre for passe composee have to add with the subject if feminine, and/or an s if the verb has plural subjects
    • For example: Elle es allee
