Eye Examination and Evaluation Notes

Examination of Eyes

General Distance Examination

  • Purpose: To visually inspect the eyes for any irregularities or abnormalities.

  • Key Aspects to Assess:

    • Asymmetry between the eyes.

    • Presence of discharge from the eyes.

    • Spasms or squinting in one or both eyes.

    • Clarity of the corneas.

    • Prolapse of the third eyelid.

Reflection Examination of Cornea

  • Observation: Look at the corneas to see the reflection of ceiling lights.

  • Indication of Abnormality: If the light reflection is disrupted, it signifies a potential corneal abnormality requiring further examination.

Specific Case: Leroy

  • Initial Observations:

    • No discharge from the eyes noted.

    • Presence of a small mass on the lower eyelid on the right side.

Structures to Evaluate in Eye Examination

  • External Structures:

    • Examination of both upper and lower eyelids for any swelling or abnormalities.

  • Sclera:

    • The sclera is the white part of the eye.

    • Assess for:

    • Color: Should be white.

    • Injection: Should not have visible blood vessels.

  • Conjunctiva:

    • Evaluation Areas:

    • Lower eyelid: Should be pink, not swollen or red.

    • Upper eyelid and fornix: Must verify normalcy in appearance.

  • Globe Structures:

    • Cornea:

    • Should be clear with no discoloration or trauma.

    • Anterior Chamber:

    • Space located between the cornea and the iris.

    • Should be clear and free of any pus or blood, which could indicate disease.

    • Iris:

    • Inspect the iris to ensure it appears normal and healthy.

    • Pupils:

    • The pupil is the hole formed by the sphincter of the iris.

    • Evaluating pupils provides indirect insight into iris health and functionality.

    • Pointed out that observing Leroy's pupils may be difficult due to his dark brown eye color.

Direct Ophthalmology Examination

  • Suggestion to turn off lights for obscured observations.

  • Overall evaluation confirms no discharge, healthy third eyelids, normal sclera, conjunctiva, corneas, and irises.

Summary of Patient Evaluation

  • Leroy exhibits healthy eyes with no visible issues apart from the noted mass on the eyelid. An extended examination is recommended for thorough analysis, especially regarding potential abnormalities.
