Pluralism and Society

What is religious pluralism?

  • the idea that many religions exist and should be accepted in society

  • society should allow different beliefs to coexist peacefully

  • focus is on tolerance, diversity and equality

Statistics

  • In 2001, there were 71.7% of Christians in the UK but in 2011, it has decreased to 59.3%

  • There are more Buddhist now than in 2001, there were 14.8% but in 2011 it double to 25.1%

Multiculturalism

  • Society contains many different religions and cultures

  • Pluralism supports living together peacefully

  • Everyone should have equal respect and freedom of belief

David Ford (Holocaust and Islam & the West)

Holocaust and inter- faith responsibility

  • Ford argues the Holocaust shows the danger of religious hatred

  • it highlights what happens when:

  • religion is used to divide people

  • there is no understanding between faiths

Therefore, inter- faith dialogue is a moral responsibility, not just optional

Islam and the West

  • Ford says there is tension and misunderstanding between Islam and Western societies

  • This is often caused by:

  • ignorance

  • stereotypes

  • lack of dialogue

He argues this tension can be reduced through serious inter- faith engagement

Strengths

  • uses history to show real consequences of intolerance

  • very relevant to modern global conflicts

  • supports ideas that dialogue improves social harmony

  • encourages responsibility between religions

Weaknesses

  • some argue dialogue alone cannot solve deep political conflicts

  • not all groups are willing to engage in dialogue

  • critics say its too idealistic about peace between religions

Scriptural reasoning movement

  • Jews, Christians and Muslims study scriptures togethers

  • they focus on understanding texts , respectful discussions and learning from differences, not about converting others

Strengths

  • Strong example of practical pluralism

  • reduces misunderstanding'

  • encourages cooperation in diverse society

Weaknesses

  • avoids debating which religion is true

  • not all groups accept sharing scriptures

Redentoris Missio (Pope John Paul II)

  • supports inter- faith dialogue

  • BUT says Christianity is still the full truth

  • evangelism (spreading Christianity) still important

Strengths

  • balanced approach (respect and mission)

Weaknesses

  • still Christian centred, not fully pluralist

  • can be seen as disguised exclusivism

Sharing the Gospel of Salvation

  • a document issued by the Church of England Synod

  • it respond to Paul Eddy who asked where the COE stood on the question of whether Christians should claim publicity that salvation could only be found in Christ

How fair is this claim that the Scriptural Reasoning Movement relativises Christian belief?

does SRM make Christianity seem like the only true religion

  • the claim is weak as people do come together and share their thoughts on scriptures, treats all 3 religions as worth studying equally and and insight in how people think and see God in their own way
