M4- effective capacity

Business Process Management (BPM) Overview

  • Effective Capacity

    • Definition: Measurement of the maximum achievable output of a process under normal conditions.

    • Flow Rate (R):

      • Definition: The amount of flow units processed in a given time period.

      • Measurement:

        • Observe the process over an extended period.

        • Count the total number of flow units processed during this time.

        • Calculate the average number of flow units per unit of time.

Key Components of Effective Capacity

1. Unit Load of a Resource Unit

  • Definition: The average time required by a resource (i) to process one flow unit.

    • Represented as: Ti

2. Effective Capacity of a Resource Unit

  • Calculation:

    • Inverse of the unit load: 1 / Ti

  • Number of Resource Units:

    • Represented as: Ci

3. Effective Capacity of the Resource Pool

  • Calculation Method:

    • Sum of effective capacities for each resource unit in the pool: Ci / Ti

Bottlenecks in BPM

  • Definition: The slowest resource pool in the process that limits overall output.

  • Impact:

    • The effective capacity of the bottleneck determines the effective capacity of the entire process.

Capacity Utilization

  • Formula:

    • Represented as: ui = R / Effective Capacity
