  • passer can be conjugated with avoir or etre depending on the meaning of the sentence
    • passer - to spend time (avoir)
    • passer par - to pass by (etre)
  • some vandertramp verbs can use both etre and avoir
    • monter, retourner, sortir, passer, descendre, entrer, rentrer
  • etre is used when the verb does not take or have a direct object (not followed by le/la/les, if followed it’ll be by de/dans/du or a preposition)
    • action done is not being done to someone or something
    • pierre est passe me voir hier - pierre passed by to see me yesterday
    • je suis sorti hier - i went out yeserday
    • je suis rentre tot
    • ils sont rentres chez eux
  • avoir is used when the actions is being done to a direct object and each sentence will have a direct object
    • to help, you can ask yourself “verb +quoi/what”
    • avons passe quoi? passed what?
    • if there is no answer to the question, you used it wrong and need to review more
  • all reflexive verbs are conjugated in passe compose using etre
    • there is a gender/number agreement on past participle
    • lave(es), leve(s)
    • when there is a body part in the sentence, there is no agreement in the sentence!
    • no lave(es) !!!
  • order is subject + reflective pronoun + etre + past participle + agreement
    • je me suis lave
  • for negative, the negation goes around the reflexive pronoun and the conjugated verb
    • je ne me suis pas lave les mains
    • elle ne s’est pas levee de bonne heure
