educate client

find a site

prime j-loop

prep supplies

pain prevention

AVOID:

same side as mastectomy

extremity with dialysis fistula

extremities with infection, burn injury

antecubital

inside of wrist

1. clean skin

2. apply tourniquet

3. stabilize vessel and insert

4. advance catheter once blood return

5. remove tourniquet

6. stabilize catheter

7. remove needle

8. connect j-loop

9. flush

10. secure with dressing
