Short term memory

Short-term Memory- The ability to hold information in mind for a brief time and work with it

  • Hippocampus involved in
    short-term memory

  • Working memory

Long term memory

  • Long-term memories encoded by hippocampus
    and cerebral cortex

  • Stored in cortex

    • Multiple locations (frontal & temporal lobes majorly involved)

  • Explicit

  • Conscious

  • Takes effort

- Semantic

- Episodic

  • Implicit

    • Procedural

    • Unconscious

    • Effortless

Implicit Memory

  •  Information that you remember unconsciously and effortlessly

  • aka Non-declarative memory

  • e. g. singing a familiar song, daily habits, driving a car



Type of implicit memory

  • Procedural Memory: Stores information on how to perform certain procedures

    • aka muscle memory

    • e.g. walking, talking, swinging a baseball bat, and riding a bike

  • Priming: Priming is a nonconscious form of human memory, which is concerned with perceptual identification of words and objects
