Tikkun Olam: means to repair of the world.

  • Usually refers to various forms of action intended to repair/improve the world.

  • Believe that god created the world incomplete

  • Work in partnerships with God to perfect the world.

Orthodox Jews: believe that the world can be improved through keeping the mitzvot.

  • Jewish will become a model society

  • Influence the world by setting an example

  • The more they obey the mitzvot, the more they bring about perfection of themselves individually.

    = as people and also the world.

Reform Jews: Believe the Messianic Age into exist through social justice.

  • Brought about through working for social justice and equality in order to perfect the world.

  • Environmental action is also important = heals the physical world

Tzedakah: Charity

  • Charity is linked to Justice

  • Believe they have an obligation work for justice and that the poor have the right to recieve help.

  • Believe we live in a unjust and inequality world.

  • “Tzedek, Tzedek you shall pursue” (Deuteronomy 16:20)

Contributes to Tikkun Olam because it aims to create a better and more just world.

Chesed: love and kindness

  • God’s act of creating the world was an act of Chesed (according to Jews)

  • Gentility Hasadim = “The giving of loving-Kindness”

  • There is no set commanded amount of Kindness = therefore voluntary/using their free will.

  • Showing nothing needed for return.

Examples: Giving the clothes to the needy, feeding the hungry, burying the dead and visiting the sick.
