Lesson 3: Magnetic Forces

Key Points::

  • A magnet is an object that can attract other metals such as iron.

  • Every magnet has a North and South Pole, one at each end. Either pole will attract metal.

Attractions:

Whether magnets attract objects depend on two characteristics: Distance and Orientation.

  1. Distance: If the distance between 2 objects is far, then the magnetic force will be weaker. Vice versa, the closer the objects are the stronger the force.

  2. Orientation: With the North and South Poles, if two north poles or two south poles are facing each other, then the two magnets will repel. However, if one north and south pole are facing each other, it will be attracted.
