b) Young modulus

dii) techniques and procedures used to determine the Young modulus for a metal

investigating the young modulus of a wire

  • measure the diameter of a wire

  • calculate its cross-sectional area

  • attach the wire to a clamp at the end of a table

  • keep the wire held across the ends of the table

  • attach a marker to the wire

  • place a metre rule underneath the wire

  • measure the length of the wire up to the marker

  • hang weights off the end of the wire

  • measure the new length of the wire up to the marker

  • calculate the extension

  • repeat five times

  • calculate the stress and strain for each weight and extension

  • plot a graph of stress against strain

  • determine the gradient of the linear part of the graph
