Agricultural Influence: Climate

Climate Zones

Intensive Farming → Agriculture that involves greater inputs of capital and paid labor relative to the space being used. (more work=less space)

Extensive Farming → Agriculture that uses fewer inputs of capital and paid labor relative to the amount of space being used. (less work=more space)

  • Ex. Rice farming is intensive and requires constant tending, measuring of water, etc. and thus smaller spaces are used
  • Ex. Ranching (raising animals for meat) requires lots of land for animals to graze but doesn’t require a huge amount of labor to tend to them

  • Practiced in: Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia
  • Products: Rice, corn, millet, sorghum, etc.
Pastoral Nomadism:

  • Practiced in: Southwest/ Central/East Asia, North Africa
  • Products: Cattle, reindeer, goats, yaks, sheep, horses, camels, etc.
Plantation Farming:

  • Products: coffee, rubber, tea, sugarcane, bananas. tobacco, etc.
Mixed Crop/Livestock Farming:
