Anatomy of the Pelvis

  • Pelvis Composition:

    • The pelvis is comprised of two hip bones (also known as innominate bones) and the sacrum. * Joints:

      • Two sacroiliac joints (located posteriorly). * One pubic symphysis (located anteriorly).

    • Joint Movement: These fibrous joints permit almost no movement.

  • Hip Bone (Innominate Bone) Formation:

    • Each hip bone is formed by the fusion of three distinct bones:

      • The ilium * The ischium * The pubis

  • Key Features of the Hip Bone:

    • Wing (or Ala) of the Ilium: A broad, bony plate.

    • Iliac Crest:

      • The broad, roughened superior edge of the ilium. * Serves as an attachment point for many important muscles. * Ends anteriorly at the anterior superior iliac spine. * Ends posteriorly at the posterior superior iliac spine. * This is the part of the hip bone upon which a person may sit.

    • Acetabulum:

      • The deep, cup-shaped socket for the head of the femur, forming the hip joint. * Features a broad, smooth articular surface (which will be observed with intact articular cartilage).

    • Obturator Foramen: A large, deep hole located in the lower part of the hip bone.

    • Pubis Features:

      • Body of the Pubis: The central part of the pubic bone. * Superior Ramus of the Pubis: The superior extension from the pubic body. * Ischiopubic Ramus: The inferior extension, formed by the fusion of parts of the ischium and pubis. * Pubic Tubercle: A distinct prominence on the pubis, which serves as the attachment point for the inguinal ligament.

  • Orientation of the Hip Bone:

    • The upper and lower parts of the hip bone face in different directions.

    • When viewed from the front, the inner aspect of the ilium and the outer aspect of the pubis and ischium are visible.

Closing Remarks

  • The speaker mentions they do not like the current view or presentation.

  • A transition to bringing another segment back into the picture is implied.
